Festina Lente

What happened?

Festina lente is an old adage. A mix of swiftness and lentitude. The icon that represents it is a dolphin with an anchor. It is a reminder of the importance of taking your time, of not rushing into things, but also of making them happen, with due diligence, with proper rhythm. This week I spent going from speed to slowness. And I mostly focused on the thing that Chiuminatto always taught me and left me: connecting with people and making things happen beyond yourself.

I contacted people from some universities to start making connections with people dedicated to Game Studies here in Chile. I'm sure there is space for creating a place where people can share deep thinking around games here in Chile. A place whew both game academics and developers can share ideas and nurture a space for a solid creative industry around games and interactive media.

I also kept contacting people to address other aspects of game development I haven't completely covered. For example, an Animator has joined our project and also a Product Designer has said he'd like to be involved creating the economic model of the game. I think this is a great step forward. I also contacted a friend who is a musician and sound designer to see if he would like to join the project. He is a great musician and I think he could bring a lot to the project in terms of environment.

What’s Wrong?

I still don’t see much jobs in the industry opening up for me. Ever since I had the interview rounds at DeepMind I haven’t seen much movement in the industry for me. I think this is a problem that has to do with the fact that I don’t have a lot of experience in the industry. I think I need to start looking for internships or entry-level positions in the industry for me. Of course I’ve applied to many, but none was as tailored for me as that one. The mix between research, game and narrative design is something I rarely see.

Anyways. The game is moving and I need to keep pushing it forward as long as I can’t find a role where my skills can be of use. I am also thinking of starting updating my C++ skills with small projects that could kelp me out on work duties. Small things so I can recover my skills and be able to work on other engines and projects. I think I’ll draw a plan to start that recovering path and maybe land a job as a C++ engineer.
